Abstract

Though some scholars have claimed that the Gesinnung and the Denkungsart are identical, in this presentation I show that they cannot be the same, for two reasons. First, while everyone has either a good or an evil Gesinnung, most people do not have a Denkungsart. Second, while even an evil Denkunsgart is admirable, an evil Gesinnung is not. Given that they are not identical, what is the relationship between them? I argue that the Gesinnung limits what kind of Denkungsart one may have: if one has an evil Gesinnung, then one may have either an evil Denkungsart or no Denkungsart at all; if one has a good Gesinnung, then one may have either a good Denkungsart or be on the path to developing a good Denkungsart.
