"Merely" Aesthetic: The Centrality of Aesthetic Judgment

Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between determinate judgment and reflective (aesthetic) judgment. It argues that Kant turns to the topics of aesthetic judgment, taste and common sense in the Critique of Judgment in order to mitigate many of the conceptual obstacles he faces in the first Critique.
